Pile Head Treatment: A Professional Solution for Concrete Pile Caps

In the construction site and after finishing the piles work, the pile head exists normally with an un-even finishing and in order to continue with the construction work to the second stage and make a concrete slab, the pile head should be treated and on then add to the Cap high concrete strength.

During construction, after the completion of piling works, pile heads often have an uneven or irregular finish. Before proceeding to the next stage of construction and casting the concrete slab or pile cap, the pile head must be properly prepared and treated.

Proper pile head treatment helps provide a sound, level, and suitable surface for subsequent concrete and structural works. Cementitious and epoxy-based repair products can be used for suitable pile head treatment applications.

5 Steps for Pile Head Treatment

The following steps should be considered when preparing and treating pile heads before applying concrete repair products.

  1. Surface Preparation

Remove dust, oil, loose materials, and other contaminants using clean water and appropriate preparation methods. The substrate must be sound, clean, and free from loose or damaged concrete.

All weak or damaged concrete should be removed until a sound concrete surface is exposed. The existing concrete should normally be adequately cured before applying repair materials, subject to the requirements of the selected repair system.

  1. Shuttering

Install suitable shuttering around all sides of the pile head. The shuttering should be high enough to achieve the required finished level, typically around 100–200 mm, depending on the project requirements.

After properly preparing and dampening the concrete surface where required, the pile head is ready for the application of the cement-based repair material followed by the epoxy-based final layer.

  1. Adjustment Cap

For the adjustment cap, a suitable three-component cement-based repair product can be used.

Mix the three components according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The mixed material should then be placed into the shuttering to the required thickness, typically 50–150 mm.

The flowable characteristics of the material allow it to achieve a self-leveling effect. Assistance with a steel trowel may be used where required to achieve the desired finish.

After application, the finished repair should be protected and cured according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Where specified, the surface may be covered with a polyethylene sheet for approximately 24 hours before proceeding to the next stage.

  1. Final Epoxy Cap

After mixing the three components to obtain a uniform epoxy mortar, add the graded aggregate component (Part C) to the epoxy resin mixture while continuing to mix for approximately 2–3 minutes, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

A complete kit should be mixed as specified by the manufacturer, and application should be carried out promptly within the product’s working time.

The mixed material should be poured onto the prepared, dry surface inside the shuttering to the required thickness, typically 10–50 mm, on top of the adjustment cap.

The flowable characteristics of the material allow for a relatively smooth and level finish. A steel trowel can be used where required.

The finished product may typically set within 2–5 hours, depending on the product, temperature, and site conditions.

  1. Final Inspection & Preparation

After the repair material has sufficiently cured, remove the shuttering and inspect the completed pile head treatment.

Check that the surface is properly level, sound, and free from visible defects before proceeding with the next stage of construction.
